Unplugged Day: My New Favorite Escape

The holidays tend to be extremely busy, and I often find myself relating to the Grinch this time of year.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Christmas, but I do not enjoy the commercialism that comes with it. It's overwhelming and takes away from the true meaning of Christmas.
This isn't a blog about my thoughts on Christmas.
But the best day I've had in a long time came right after an overwhelming Christmas holiday. It all started at 9 p.m. on Sunday, December 28th, 2025 when my husband said,
"I want to have an unplug day tomorrow. Actually, I'm going to start right now!"
From that moment on, both of our phones were off and on our kitchen counter until bedtime on Monday night.
Unplugged Monday
I woke up to my son calling for me from his bed.
"Mmoomm! I'm hu-u-u-ngry!" In a way I can only describe as froggy. So sweet. My baby.

I could see the sun starting to come up through my window. My sign that it's probably 6 a.m., which I was able to confirm once him and I got downstairs. It was 6:15 a.m.
I got my sweet boy set up with a movie, food, and his water, then I sat down at my desk and spent some much needed time with the Lord. What a beautiful start to the day.
Now, I'm not going to give you a play-by-play of our day, but I do have some things I would like to share with you.
3 things that I noticed on this amazing day
I reach for my phone a lot. More than I ever thought I did. I found myself looking for it and then remembering. I even thought I saw Josh on his phone one time when I walked by him, but of course, I didn't. Maybe all of this seems like no big deal to you, but it was to me. Am I really that glued to my phone?
I'm more productive without my phone. I'm guilty of stopping to look something up or answer a text, then getting sidetracked with Instagram Reels or Pinterest. Five minutes quickly turn into 45 minutes, then before I know it, I've lost even more precious time. Why do I do that?
My children noticed the difference in our day too. They never said anything about our phones or even asked where they were, but it felt like they just knew something was different. I watched them play with their toys so peacefully almost all day, and they even helped me clean and organize their playroom. What else have I missed?
Josh and I repeatedly said, "This is just the best day." Although we turned on the TV a few times because the kids wanted to watch a movie, and we spent a little time playing video games in the late afternoon, we still noticed a significant difference in our day just by disconnecting from our phones.
This day truly was a eye-opener, and moving forward, I want to prioritize unplugging more often. And I'd like to encourage you to do the same. Ask yourself the same questions that I was asking myself throughout our day.
Am I really that glued to my phone?
Honestly, Yes and this day proved it. But I don't want to be.
Why do I do that?
It's so easy to get distracted. It's honestly a trap, but no more!
What else have I missed?
I'm sure more than I would ever want to admit, but I thank the Lord for His grace and mercy. I also thank my beautiful babies for their sweet forgiveness. Will I still mess up sometimes? sure, but I'll get right back up and do better next time.
Thank you for sticking with me on my rant! And I pray y'all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. And I'd like to leave you with one final thought:
What do you want to do with the time you are given?

So be careful how you live; be mindful of your steps. Don’t run around like idiots as the rest of the world does. Instead, walk as the wise! Make the most of every living and breathing moment because these are evil times. - Ephesians 5:15-16
P.S. This is not meant to bring shame to anyone for their phone use; obviously, I use my phone like everyone else. My desire in this blog is to simply encourage everyone to think and refocus their time.
