Making Time for Vacation

Last week, our family went on a vacation. We had been planning and saving for this trip since March, and it turned out to be my favorite vacation so far with my little family. Was it extravagant? No. Was it grand? Not really. Was it perfect for us? Absolutely!

If you have the opportunity to plan a vacation for you and your family, I highly recommend it.

In reflecting on our adventure, I am reminded of a question I was once asked. I was a kid in kids' church and the question was "What is the most valuable thing you have?" Some kids said a toy, some said their home. And yes, these things do have value, but the most valuable thing is TIME. Once it's gone you can't get it back, so what are you going to do with it?

Your kids are only young once, and you can't get this time back. So I would like to encourage you to make the most of this time. Spend time with your babies, teach them about Jesus and real life, snuggle every chance you get, and take the vacation.

This vacation was time well spent.

I realize that vacations can be expensive, but they don't have to be. Here are a couple of tips for planning a vacation on a budget.

  1. Plan ahead.

We planned this vacation for months. We set money aside every paycheck, and made a plan for the things that we would want to do that would cost money.

  2. Set a budget.

After making your plan, decide if those things all fit in your budget. How much do you want to spend? Adjust your plan according to what your budget allows and always leave room for changes in plans or spur-of-the-moment things.

  3. Leave room for adventure.

Creating a plan and sticking to a budget doesn't mean everything must follow a strict schedule. We always find that the most enjoyable vacations often involve spontaneous adventures, trying a new restaurant, taking an unplanned walk, or making last-minute changes. Not every change will cost money either.

Naturally, everyone has their own way of vacationing, and that's perfectly fine. What truly matters is making the time to take one. Again, your children are only young once, so cherish the time you have with them. Take a vacation! Make memories together!

Melissa McCarty

Hello! My name is

and I am a homeschool mom.

I like to think that I am a simple creature. At a very young age I came to know Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I’ve still had struggles in life, but through it all God has never left me. I’ve, also, always known that He had a call on my life for something great, and as a child I would say “when I grow up I want to be a mom”. Now, I am beyond blessed to be a wife and mother, which I think is pretty great. All of this (Jesus, Wife, Mother) is me in a nutshell.

Some of my favorite things include singing, hiking, nature, reading, Lord of the Ring (movies, books, games—anything), Anne of Green Gables, baking, being with my family and the color green.
